Bruges, Belgium is one of those fairytale European cities! I’m talking enchantingly beautiful everywhere you turn. From picturesque B&B’s and restaurants to quaint little chocolate shops and boat rides, this town will surely attempt to capture your heart.
And it will succeed!
Sure, all the shops are pretty touristy, but that’s part of the medieval town’s charm. I would definitely recommend this city to anyone who’s looking to get away from the urban city feel. These are some photos I took during my stay in Bruges.

If you plan on visiting Bruges, I’d recommend staying in the city center– it’s quite affordable.

A visit to Bruges isn’t complete without a boat trip on its canals. You’ll get to see another perspective of the town– and I’d even say the best views I witnessed were from the boat!
Kind people, good food, and magical vibes all around the town.
You’re in Belgium. You definitely get some moules-frites (mussels and fries) and CHOCOLATE. For the fries, dip with ketchup and mayonnaise. Belgian mayonnaise is like none other. It’s a must.
At a tucked-away gothic museum/bar that’s only open Sunday nights, we sang like pirates with the owner and his “gypsy band”. This summed up to be one of the best experiences of my life.
Where Is Bruges, Belgium?
Bruges, often referred to as the “Venice of the North,” is a postcard-perfect medieval city located in the northwest part of Belgium. It’s situated in the Flanders region, known for its rich history, well-preserved architecture, and meandering canals.
Bruges is actually really easy to get to. To give you a sense of where it is, here are some nearby cities:
- Brussels: The capital of Belgium, Brussels, is approximately 90 kilometers (56 miles) southeast of Bruges. Traveling by train, the journey takes around 1 hour and 30 minutes, making it an easily accessible day trip.
- Ghent: Another charming Belgian city, Ghent, is in close proximity to Bruges, situated just about 50 kilometers (31 miles) northeast. The train ride between Bruges and Ghent takes approximately 30 minutes, making it a convenient excursion — especially if you plan on city-hopping your way thru Belgium!
- Antwerp: Located to the northeast, Antwerp is around 130 kilometers (81 miles) from Bruges. The train journey between Bruges and Antwerp typically takes around 1 hour and 30 minutes.
- Paris, France: While not immediately adjacent, Paris is a feasible destination for a longer excursion. The distance between Bruges and Paris is approximately 300 kilometers (186 miles). Traveling by high-speed train (Thalys), the journey takes roughly 2 hours and 30 minutes. If you’re visiting Paris, I’d recommend staying a few nights in Lille, France before heading to Bruges!
- Amsterdam, Netherlands: Although a bit farther away, Amsterdam is still within reach. The distance from Bruges to Amsterdam is around 290 kilometers (180 miles). Traveling by train, the journey takes approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes.
Bruges is exceptionally well-connected by train, making it easy for travelers to explore nearby cities and countries within a reasonable time frame. The efficient European rail system allows for convenient day trips or extended explorations from this enchanting Belgian city.
