Guangdong Romance Park: Where Cantonese History Comes to Life

If you happen to be in the Shenzhen, Guangzhou, or Foshan area and want a crash course in the rich history and culture of the Guangdong region, Guangdong Romance Park is the perfect introduction.

Guangdong Romance Park, otherwise known as Guangdong Qianguqing Tourist Area, officially opened its gates in Foshan on the first day of the Chinese New Year in 2024. To this day, it’s still one of the most popular attractions of the Guangdong Province.

This innovative cultural park combines immersive attractions, extravagant performances, and fascinating historical narratives, all designed to showcase the unique spirit of Cantonese people.

Just like the other “Romance Parks” across China—like the ones in Shanghai, Guilin, Lijiang, Zhangjiajie, and Sanya—these parks aim to reproduce the history, culture, and ethnic customs of these regions.

Guangdong Romance Park is the newest addition to the lineup, offering modern updates and fresh experiences.

At the park, you can stroll through themed streets, each filled with vendors, museums, and even haunted house attractions (oddly enough). These areas capture the daily life, traditions, and creativity of the Guangdong people.

The highlight of your day will be the Eternal Love of Guangdong stage show, a one-hour spectacle that’ll leave you windblown by how good it is.

Whether you’re a first-time visitor to China or a seasoned traveler, this park offers a truly unique way to connect with the essence of Guangdong’s culture. Here’s everything you need to know before going.

What is Guangdong Romance Park?

Guangdong Romance Park - Foshan China

Guangdong Romance Park is essentially a cultural tourism theme park that combines history, performing arts, and leisure. If you’ve ever experienced Xcaret Eco Park in Mexico or the Polynesian Cultural Center in Hawaii, think of Guangdong Romance Park as being like that.

Opened in 2024, this innovative park stands out as a blend of a theme park and live performance theater, offering an immersive cultural experience like no other. As you wander through the park, you’ll transition from ancient Guangdong streets brimming with history to fantastical landscapes inspired by legends of the Baiyue people.

As we said, the biggest draw of the park is the large-scale stage show, Eternal Love of Guangdong. This is a must-see, especially if you’ve yet to experience a Mainland China production.

Hint hint: Large-scale shows in China are some of the best we’ve seen worldwide.

What to Expect at Guangdong Romance Park

Guangdong Romance Park is an open-air space designed to transport you through time and culture. The park is family-friendly but has plenty to offer adults with its mix of culture, thrills (ahem, haunted houses), and performances.

Let’s start with the layout of the park. The park is divided into a few different themed streets.

The Time Travel Street is my favorite street!

Guangdong Romance Park: Themed Streets

  • Time-Traveling Street: A playful, immersive experience designed to feel like you’re stepping between eras. You’ll find all kinds of retro buildings and signs in this area.
  • Martial Arts Street: Celebrate Guangdong’s rich kung fu heritage with live demonstrations and memorabilia. The art of dragon dancing is showcased here too.
  • Ancient Market Street: Step back into old Guangdong and explore traditional crafts and goods.
  • Bohemian Street: Foshan has a rich history connected to the Maritime Silk Road, which facilitated trade/culture exchanges between China and other regions worldwide, including Persia. This area features an eclectic mix of art, music, and Persian culture.

These areas house different souvenir stores, snack shops, cafeterias, handicraft shops, costume rental shops, and tons of photo ops.

The handpainted fan shop was very fun to browse through, as was the beauty goods store. All the products have such beautiful packaging reminiscent of Shanghai back in the 1930s!

Guangdong Romance Park: Attractions

Outside of marveling at the different themed streets, the park offers a mix of shows, interactive experiences, and attractions that cater to a wide range of interests. Kids will most definitely have fun, and the history and charm of the attractions will enthrall adults too.

Eternal Love of Guangdong Show: The highlight of the park is the Eternal Love of Guangdong show. This must-see performance brings to life the history of Guangdong with dancing, costumes, special effects, aerial stunts, and captivating storytelling.

Performances Throughout The Day: There are over 20 distinct theaters/performing spaces in the park, each showcasing a different act. Watch shows like “Nanhai No. 1” and “Guangzhou Uprising” that highlight Guangdong’s history and cultural resilience. There are other acts with acrobatics, dancing, etc.

Haunted Houses: Not sure why these are here, but I’m guessing it’s because Chinese people like horror attractions? You can experience not one… but TWO different haunted house walkthroughs: the Horror Research Institute and Liaozhai Horror House. We went through the Horror Research Institute and it took us forever (over 7 minutes!) to get through.

Kid-Friendly Shows: “WA! Dinosaurs” introduces children to art and prehistoric themes in an engaging way… through VR!

The Great Earthquake 5D Experience: “The Great Earthquake” combines stunning visuals and heartfelt storytelling.

Kids’ Play Area: Consists of a jungle gym and a water area.

and of course, in true China fashion… lots of photo-taking opportunities!

Eternal Love of Guangdong Show

The Eternal Love of Guangdong show is the crown jewel of Guangdong Romance Park and a must-see for anyone visiting. This show is often called a “once-in-a-lifetime” experience, so you really can’t say you’ve visited if you don’t stay for the show!

This one-hour show tells the story of Guangdong’s historical milestones from ancient times to the modern era using amazing special effects, stage props, great acting/dancing, and cultural performances.

You’ll see scenes from ancient times, like the Baiyue people and their traditions. Martial arts fans will love the part about Wong Fei-hung, a famous kung fu master, complete with wire stunts and kung fu moves paired with traditional Canto songs!

Fun fact: This region is where kung fu began, including Wing Chun, which was made famous by Ip Man and Bruce Lee.

There are also beautiful dances that show off Cantonese culture during the time period when the Guangdong area flourished. The show also depicts Guangdong’s tough times during wars and how it became a modern city today.

The special effects are incredible—water from the Pearl River seems to flood the stage, big ships sail across, and the stage keeps changing to match the scenes.

Needless to say, you’ll go through all kinds of emotions as the show takes you through the area’s different historical moments.

Guangdong Romance Park Tickets

The easiest way to buy tickets is on Trip.com.

Tickets start at ¥218 (about $30 USD) and include access to all performances and attractions within the park, including the Eternal Love of Guangdong Show. It’s best to book online in advance, as spots for the different showtimes can fill up quickly.

It’s a big theater, but some seats are better than others. On Trip.com, you can choose between Standard Seating or VIP Seating.

After seeing how big the theater was, I’d say go ahead and splurge for the VIP seats since the price difference is nominal.

“Standard” seats could mean getting seats in the tenth row or the thirtieth row! There’s no way of locking in seats close to the front unless you go with the VIP option.

Getting There

Guangdong Romance Park - Foshan China - 2
  • From Foshan: The park is easily accessible by taxi or ride-share apps like Didi.
  • From Guangzhou: Take the metro or a bus to Foshan, then transfer to a taxi or local transportation to the park.
  • From Shenzhen: Take the high-speed train departing from Shenzhen North Station and arriving at Foshan Xi (or Foshan West). The ride is about 1 hour. From there, call a Didi to get to the park.
  • From Hong Kong: Take the high-speed train departing from Hong Kong West Kowloon Station and arriving at Foshan Xi (or Foshan West). The ride is about 1.5 hours. From there, call a Didi to get to the park.
  • How We Did It: We came from Shenzhen as part of a 2-day guided tour of the Foshan/Guangzhou area. The tour was in Cantonese, so I won’t recommend it here since most of you won’t understand a lick of what the tour guide would be saying!

👉 Pro Tip: Navigation and language barriers can be tricky in China, especially outside major cities. Consider joining a guided tour for a hassle-free experience.

Practical Tips For Your Visit

Guangdong Romance Park - Foshan China - 6
I loved how empty the park was at 5pm!
  • Hate dealing with children running around everywhere? Avoid visiting in the fall. Kids are everywhere due to local school holidays. If you must visit during the months of November and December, weekends tend to have fewer children and more adult visitors.
  • Summers in Foshan are humid, so if possible, avoid visiting in the summer.
  • Plan for crowds. Romance Parks are popular, and this new one is no exception. Getting photos of the park without people in it will be nearly impossible.
  • Make time for the mini shows and parades throughout the park. There are over 20 distinct theaters/performing spaces in the park, each showcasing a different act.
  • Reserve your evening for Eternal Love of Guangdong. Arrive early for the best seats.
  • If you want to enjoy the park without the tourists or the kids, try and catch the latest show. The tour buses all leave by 5pm, so you’ll almost have the park to yourself.
