There are SO many new luggage brands out there these days. It gets overwhelming.
If you’ve somehow narrowed down your suitcase search to Monos and Paravel (just as I did!), then this post is going to help you get to the finish line so you can ultimately pull the trigger on the suitcase of your dreams!
I personally own both, and I think they are great in their own ways. Do I have negative things to say about either? No.
Do I think one might be better than the other? Maybe.
I’ll start by introducing you to each brand and what type of suitcases they offer, followed by a head-to-head comparison on which bag I think is better! Let’s dive in.

ABOUT THE BRAND: MONOS
Monos, a luggage company based in Vancouver, Canada has a really admirable mission statement.
The Monos team started with a specific set of criteria they needed to meet–design, quality, and affordability. Monos found that other luggage brands in the market fulfilled one or even two of these, but not all three together. Thus, the Monos luggage was created–there was a gap that needed filling!
Monos claims to give travelers what the luggage market was lacking – premium, minimalist luggage, built with only the finest quality materials and components – all at a fair price.
They are also Climate Neutral Certified, which means the company has net-zero carbon emissions — the first luggage brand to do so.
Another thing that draws people to Monos is the fact that luggage bags come with a 100-day trial period and a lifetime warranty on parts.
Some of Monos’ standout features include the following:
- Shell made with polycarbonate material
- TSA combination lock
- YKK zippers
- Hinomoto Lisof Silent Run wheels
- A divider inside the main compartment
- Internal compression pad
MONOS: SUITCASE SIZE OPTIONS
Monos luggage can be best categorized in this way–there is checked luggage, aluminum/hybrid carry-ons, carry-ons with a laptop pocket, and regular carry-ons.
MONOS CARRY-ON FEATURES
Monos’ Carry-On is the standard option and also the most affordable option offered by the brand. It comes equipped with all the staple features listed above (unbreakable polycarbonate shell, sturdy telescopic handle, TSA-approved lock, whisper-quiet wheels, and all-premium materials).
It’s currently available in 13 colors total — eight official colors and five limited edition colors. In my opinion, the Olive Green, Sage Green, and Terracotta options are the easiest on the eyes!
The great thing about the Carry-On size is that it was designed to fit in the overhead bin of almost any flight, anywhere in the world.
Carry-On Specifications
- Exterior Dimensions: : 22″ × 14″ × 9″
- Interior Case Dimensions: 20″ × 13.5″
- Weight: 7.01 lbs
- Capacity: 39.9 liters

MONOS CARRY-ON PLUS FEATURES
Now moving down to the Carry-On Plus. The main difference between the standard carry-on and the Carry-On Plus is its size; the Plus is a bit bigger and offers 8 more liters of storage than the standard. This extra space is better for travelers who tend to take longer trips or who tend to pack more for their trips.

This external compartment features a 15” laptop sleeve and three additional zippered pouches for all the other little things you may want easy access to.
- Exterior Dimensions: 22″ × 14″ × 9″

MONOS CARRY-ON PRO PLUS FEATURES
The Carry-On Pro Plus will be the luggage for you if you’re looking for all the bells and whistles. The “Plus” in the name is for the fact that this is the slightly larger version of the carry-on, while the “Pro” signifies the additional features such as the laptop compartment.
Again, the additional compartment features a 15” laptop sleeve and three extra zippered pockets.
- Exterior Dimensions: 23″ × 15″ × 9.5″

ABOUT THE BRAND: PARAVEL
This sentence says it all: “Paravel is the sustainable travel brand dedicated to exploring the world while minimizing our impact on it.”
Let’s start with their origin story. Since 2016, the Paravel brand has been paving the way for sustainable travel. When its founder Indré Rockefeller took a trip to Antarctica and witnessed the detrimental effects of climate change, he and co-founder Andy Krantz began dedicating their time to creating sustainable, eco-friendly, and functional pieces that would then become Paravel’s defining feature.
Because of all that hard work and workshopping, what we get today are sustainable suitcases that make a statement. All of Paravel’s travel gear is not only made of sustainable recycled materials but also has durable construction and standout design. I mean, have you seen the suitcases? Classic and sophisticated, to say the least!
The biggest standout of this brand has been its carbon-neutral suitcase. The Aviator suitcase offsets emissions throughout the entire process (from it being created to it being shipped) to ensure the brand’s sustainability standards.
Today, Paravel offers everything from suitcases to weekender bags, fashionable totes to packing cubes, foldable backpacks to handbags, and more! Among the vast collection, all are made from recycled and upcycled materials. It’s truly amazing how everything from the zippers to the telescopic handles, vegan leather trims to interior linings are all made from recycled materials.
Some of Paravel’s standout features include the following:
- Lightweight and durable recycled polycarbonate shell
- 360-degree frictionless wheels with carbon steel bearings
- 3-tier aircraft-grade recycled aluminum handle
- Built-in TSA-approved combination lock
- Vegan leather trim
- Interior compression board
- A zippered divider inside the main compartment
- Water-resistant interior made from upcycled plastic bottles
- Reinforced metal corners

Paravel has a total of 3 luggage sizes: the Aviator Carry-On, Aviator Carry-On Plus, and Aviator Grand.
AVIATOR CARRY-ON FEATURES
The Aviator Carry-On is the smaller of the two options and also the most affordable option offered by the brand. It comes equipped with all the staple features listed above (unbreakable polycarbonate shell, sturdy aircraft-grade telescopic handle, TSA-approved lock, whisper-quiet wheels, and all-recycled materials.
It’s currently available in five different colors. All of the color combos are classy and stylish. In my opinion, the Safari Green and Scout Tan options are the easiest on the eyes!
The great thing about the standard Carry-On size is that it was designed to fit in the overhead bin of almost any flight, anywhere in the world.
Carry-On Specifications
- Dimensions (L x H x W): 13.7″ x 21.7″ x 9″
- Weight: 8.2 lbs
- Capacity: 43.7 liters
- Trip Length: 2-5 days worth of clothes and 1-2 pairs of shoes
AVIATOR CARRY-ON PLUS FEATURES

This extra space is better for travelers who tend to take longer trips or who tend to pack more for their trips.
In terms of colors, you’ll find the same colors for both sizes.

Which Paravel suitcase do I personally own? The Aviator Carry-On Plus in Safari Green.
MONOS VS PARAVEL: CARRY-ON SUITCASE COMPARISON
From a sustainability perspective, both Monos and Paravel are doing their part to reduce the strain on this planet. Extra points for both of the brands here!
Functionally speaking, these two brands’ suitcases are also quite similar. Looking at the carry-on suitcases in particular, these are all the things they have in common:
- Lightweight and durable polycarbonate shell
- 360-degree frictionless wheels, both are buttery smooth when rolling on solid ground
- Built-in TSA-approved combination lock
- Vegan leather trim
- Built-in compression pad
- A zippered divider inside the main compartment
In terms of differences:
- The shell: Paravel’s shell has vegan leather trim details on the exterior | Monos’ shell is primarily just one color throughout
- Exterior compartment: Monos has a line of suitcases that come with a zippered compartment on the front great for laptops (Monos Carry-On Pro) | Paravel does not
- Aluminum product line: Monos has a line of zipperless aluminum suitcases in 2 carry-on sizes (Example: Hybrid Carry-On) | Paravel does not
- Telescopic handle: Monos has an adjustable telescopic handle with 4 height settings | Paravel has an aluminum handle with 4 height settings

MONOS VS. PARAVEL: WHICH BRAND IS BETTER?
First off, I want to start by saying that I love both my Monos Carry-On Pro and my Paravel Aviator Carry-On dearly.
What first drew me to the Monos Carry-On Pro was its external compartment which stows 15-inch laptops wonderfully. Since then, I’ve actually upgraded my laptop to a 16-inch MacBook Pro, which means I’m no longer able to use that pocket for my laptop. Having said that, I still find it useful for smaller items like headphones, iPads, documents, etc.
In terms of the Paravel Aviator Carry-On, I pulled the trigger on this one simply because I was obsessed with the way the Aviator suitcases looked. Everything they make is undeniably beautiful, but the Aviator stands among one of the most aesthetically pleasing bags I’ve ever seen! It’s modern, with a classy touch of vintage.
So ultimately, which brand is better for you?
WINNER (FOR VALUE): MONOS
With these two stacked against each other head-to-head, I’d declare Monos suitcases as the clear winner when it comes to value. For about $100 less, you get a whole lot more extras (1 anti-microbial laundry bag and two shoe bags, plus vegan leather luggage tag).
You also get Wayfarer Rewards with every purchase. As a Wayfarer, you get access to exclusive rewards and savings.
So how does it all work? Well, you’ll basically earn Monos Miles every time you shop. Once you have points, you can then redeem them as cash for your next purchase.
For example, for my Carry On Pro luggage purchase, I earned 509 points. Already with just that purchase alone, I was able to redeem this for $25 USD off my next purchase!
From there, I was encouraged to complete a few extra steps to earn additional Monos Miles. This included following Monos Travel on social media, entering my birthdate, and more. Just a few actions later, I was up to a total of 900 Monos Miles–enough for $45 off my next purchase!
By leaving a review, you can also be rewarded with 100 points. And once my birthdate rolls around, I’ll have another 200 Monos Miles in the bag. I ended up using my collection of Monos Miles on a set of their compressible packing cubes for which I paid $55 USD (before taxes)–essentially 50% off! Love this perk.
Wayfarer Rewards can also grant you VIP status. Everyone starts at Silver. Once you spend enough to get to Gold Status, you unlock extra perks such as early access to sales and 15% off new product launches.
WINNER (FOR TRIAL PERIOD AND WARRANTY): MONOS
All Monos luggage purchased directly from Monos.com is backed by a lifetime warranty extended to the original owner of the item. Monos products purchased through authorized third-party retailers are also backed by our lifetime warranty.
And because Monos Travel wants you to feel confident about your purchase, they will allow returns within 100 days.
NOTE: The 100-day trial is voided if your suitcase has been used in transit. Pack it up and roll it around your house to get a feel for it, but don’t use it on a flight and then try to return it. They don’t accept returns on suitcases that are in an unsellable condition. The shipping cost of a return will be deducted from your total refund.
On the other hand, Paravel offers a 10-year warranty and a 30-day return period.
WINNER (FOR AESTHETICS): PARAVEL
It’s no secret that this bag is simple, yet beautiful. I mean, just look at it. Such a soothing color both inside and out to stare at–and not a lot of nooks and crannies to have you forgetting which pocket you put something in. Love it.
The first thing that really stood out to me about Paravel’s suitcases? The warm tan vegan-leather trimmings that can be found all over this bag. It complements the minimalist vibe so well, with a nice touch of vintage!
And the beautiful designs don’t just stop there. They have a ton of other great products including all kinds of bags (totes, handbags, duffels, weekender bags), as well as packing cubes, card cases, passport cases, and more. You can check out all their tasteful travel accessories here.
If you’re looking to pick up some extra bags or luggage pieces, consider getting one of their travel sets. They’ve got Aviator Packing Cube Sets, Cabana Sets, Weekender Sets, Frequent Flying Kits, and much more!
WINNER (FOR SUSTAINABILITY EFFORTS): PARAVEL
While both brands make it a priority to be sustainable, Paravel has the slight upper hand here.
The entire Aviator suitcase is carbon-neutral, which is really commendable. This suitcase incorporates sustainable and recycled materials wherever possible, including a recycled polycarbonate shell, recycled zippers, a lining made from 15 recycled plastic bottles, recycled vegan leather, and a telescopic handle made from recycled, aircraft-grade aluminum.
On top of that, they offset all of the emissions that come from sourcing, assembly, shipping, and its final delivery to you!
WINNER (FOR SCRATCHES AND SCUFFING): PARAVEL
When I compare the amount of scuffs/scratches on my two suitcases, my Paravel suitcase has fared slightly better over the years. I think this is for two reasons:
- The exterior’s ridged pattern helps to minimize the look of scuffs/scratches
- The fact that it comes with a tight-fitting dustbag that I carry around with me when traveling
So.. how have I kept my Paravel Aviator Carry-On clean and scuff-free if it needs to be checked?
The Paravel Aviator Carry-On comes with a black tight-fitting dustbag that fits perfectly over the suitcase like a sleeve. It fits like a body suit on the suitcase and velcros shut at the bottom.
While it’s not meant to fully replace a suitcase cover, it will do the trick in keeping scuffs and scratches off your suitcase if you’re in a pinch and find yourself needing to gate-check your bag.
It’s definitely saved me from at least 2 completely full flights from London where there was no more overhead space for passengers! I was sad that I had to get my carry-on checked, but luckily having the dustbag with me meant I could prevent the consequences of rough handling.
OVERALL WINNER: MONOS
Overall, I’d declare Monos the overall winner here. Here are a few reasons why:
- More colors to choose from
- More variations of the carry-on bags (hybrid/aluminum line, ‘Pro’ line with external compartment)
- More sizes to choose from
- Better trial period and lifetime warranty
- Upon purchase, you get free shipping and collect Wayfarer Rewards (which can be redeemed for cash discounts on your next purchase)
While I love, love, love my Paravel Carry-on Plus and Small Cabana Tote, these are definitely more splurge items that might not be ‘worth it’ to everyone — even though it’s worth it for me. I remain blinded by their beauty and simplicity! But hey, there’s nothing wrong with that.
If you are also leaning towards Paravel because of how gorgeous and clean their gear looks, know that you are not alone. And that I support you — they’re truly great products!
Ultimately, both brands are great, both have very noble mission statements, and both make very beautiful travel gear. The best brand for you will ultimately depend on how much you want to spend and what kind of features you’re looking for (both aesthetically and functionally).
No matter which brand of suitcase you get, I have no doubt you’re going to love it! After all, there’s a reason why I proudly own BOTH!
