As the capital of Andalusia, Seville has played a pivotal role in shaping Spain’s identity and is steeped in centuries of tradition and heritage. You’ll easily see it all around town — even without trying.

From the iconic Alcázar Palace, a testament to Moorish architecture, to the majestic Cathedral, a masterpiece of Gothic design, the city’s landmarks reflect its multicultural heritage. Flamenco music and dance, bullfighting, and vibrant street festivals add to the city’s dynamic cultural scene.

Present-Day Seville

Today, Seville is a booming city where ancient charm meets modern flair. Its narrow cobblestone streets are lined with orange trees, quaint tapas bars, and bustling plazas, creating an atmosphere that is both romantic and lively.

Of all the romantic cities in Spain, this is by far the most romantic in my eyes! I solo traveled here in 2018, but 100% plan on revisiting with Papu someday!

Its strategic position on the Mediterranean Sea has made it a melting pot of influences, from ancient Roman roots to Gothic and Modernist architecture (ever heard of Gaudí?).

Today, Barcelona is a bustling city where tradition meets innovation — but by the coast. Its tree-lined boulevards are dotted with modernist masterpieces, lively plazas, and stylish cafes. All of which beckon you to stay just a while longer!

With amazing Mediterranean weather, you can spend your days wandering through charming neighborhoods, dine on some truly amazing seafood, and soak up the sun on the city’s beautiful beaches.

What Is Barcelona Known For?

Barcelona is world-famous for its unique architecture, including the Sagrada Familia, Park Güell, and Casa Batlló. It’s also famous for its energetic street life, world-class cuisine, and lively festivals, such as La Mercè and Sant Jordi.

You’ll get a bit of everything, which is why I’m totally obsessed with the city. Expect everything from quirky architecture, art, history, gastronomy, and friendly people!

Toledo, known as the “City of Three Cultures,” is celebrated for its super medieval vibes, rich history, grand architecture, and cultural heritage.

Perched on a hill overlooking the Tagus River, the city is home to a wealth of historic landmarks, including the imposing Alcázar fortress and the magnificent Toledo Cathedral. Expect the historic streets to be almost like a winding maze, with streets lined with medieval buildings, synagogues, and mosques, reflecting all the influences of its past (Moorish, Catholic, and Jewish).

While you’re here, check out all the gift shops selling medieval swords and knives! Even if you’re not interested in buying, it sure is fun to peruse.

Salamanca, Spain

Salamanca, often referred to as the “Golden City,” is best known for its pretty architecture, prestigious university, and youthful atmosphere. This is a lesser-visited city, so it’s a great option if escaping tourists is what you’re after.

Its historic center, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is home to iconic landmarks such as the Plaza Mayor, a grand square surrounded by ornate Baroque buildings. In fact, this is THE largest plaza you’ll find in all of Spain!

The city’s university, founded in the 13th century, is one of the oldest in Europe and is home to a must-visit library and an impressive façade adorned with intricate carvings.

1. Hang out in the Plaza Mayor, Salamanca’s main square, to admire the grand architecture and take in the always-lively atmosphere.
2. Visit the University of Salamanca, one of the oldest universities in Europe, and explore its historic buildings and beautiful courtyards.
3. Wander through the historic center and enjoy the charming streets, picturesque squares, and beautiful churches (like Salamanca Cathedral).
4. See the Convento de San Esteban, which is not as commonly known/visited by tourists but it’s VERY pretty and I highly recommend it.
5. Climb the towers of the Clerecía Church for nice views of the city and countryside.
