Where is La Paz, Mexico?

La Paz is located in northwestern Mexico in the state of Baja California Sur.

The Baja California Peninsula, which stretches south from California in the United States, is home to two Mexican states–Baja California and Baja California Sur (referred to by locals as BCS).

La Paz is BCS’s state capital, doubling as a laid-back yet charming town with historic traditions.

So what’s nearby? Cabo San Lucas, along with San Jose del Cabo, the two municipalities served by Los Cabos Airport (SJD), are roughly two hours away by bus or vehicle. Likewise, it takes roughly 1 hour to get to Todos Santos, another popular BCS town you might have heard of.

What is La Paz Known For?

While La Paz is mostly used as a jumping-off point for Cabo San Lucas’ beach resorts, there are many reasons to stay a while in La Paz itself! If you’re looking for a laidback seaside vacation, this is going to be the spot for you.

On the surface, La Paz is best known for its “Malecón”, the coastal boardwalk of the historic center, as well as the sun-drenched beaches and picturesque bay. From the looks of it, it’s a slow-paced town with old-world charm.

When you dig a little deeper, you’ll discover that it’s a magical place for nature and all things water-related! Because of its location right off the Sea of Cortez, La Paz offers easy access to snorkeling, diving, fishing, swimming, whale watching, sailing to offshore islands, and exploring isolated beach coves.

With marine life so ingrained in the culture, it’s no wonder the Autonomous University of Baja California Sur, the local university, is considered to be a top choice for students pursuing a degree in marine biology.

Since the mid-1970s, when an international airport opened and the Transpeninsular Highway connecting the United States and Mexico was constructed, La Paz has been a popular tourist destination.

La Paz also serves as a commercial fishing port, a regional transportation hub, and a market for agricultural products such as corn (maize), wheat, beans, cotton, and livestock grown in the surrounding area. Plastics and textiles are among the items produced.

How To Get To La Paz

The easiest way to get to La Paz is by catching a connecting flight from one of two places: Mexico City (MEX) or Los Cabos (SJC). From either of these airports, you’d then fly to La Paz Airport (LAP).

Flights from major US cities to Los Cabos are typically the more expensive of the two options. If you plan on just getting there by plane only, we recommend flying into Mexico City for slightly cheaper flights.

Want to add in a mini road trip? From Los Cabos (SJD), you can catch a bus from Los Cabos to La Paz at any time of day or rent a car at the airport and drive yourself there.

The new toll road, Highway 19, runs along the Pacific Coast and the Sierra de la Laguna mountains on the other, making for a beautiful journey to La Paz.

Do I Need a Car in La Paz?

While a car can be convenient for getting around La Paz, it is not absolutely necessary. Because the city is so small, most places are accessible by foot.

Renting a car will totally depend on what you want to do, but it’s pretty easy and affordable to get around on foot, by bus or taxi.

If you’d rather not rent a car but want to explore the nearby beaches, you’ll actually be okay without a car. It’s pretty common for rideshare cars and taxis to drop travelers off at the nearby beaches.

Alternatively, you can catch a bus (colectivo) from the bus terminal on the Malecon to get to lots of places. It costs about 90 pesos each way and runs on a pretty regular schedule. You’ll just need a little more patience with this method of transportation compared to calling an Uber or taxi.

Lastly, if you’re looking to venture further, take drives, and/or want the ability to stop and take pictures of the scenery along your drives, a car may be a better option for you.

Car rentals are available downtown and also through your hotel.
