Some vacations are ordinary; others are the ones you remember for the rest of your life.
Maybe yours looks like waking up to the Pacific from a private lanai, coffee in hand, with nothing on the agenda except deciding whether to spend the afternoon snorkeling or floating in the pool.
Maybe it’s a candlelit dinner with the ocean stretching into the darkness, followed by a sunset that turns the sky every shade of pink, tangerine, and gold. Or perhaps it’s a few blissfully slow days in a tucked-away cottage where the only thing interrupting your morning is the sound of waves rolling onto shore.
This is Maui.
The island has a way of making ordinary moments feel cinematic. You can watch the sunrise from the summit of Haleakalā, wander beneath waterfalls and bamboo forests along the Road to Hāna, snorkel alongside sea turtles, or simply spend an entire afternoon doing absolutely nothing on a beautiful beach.
For honeymooners, anniversary trips, and those once-in-a-lifetime vacations you’ve been saving for, Maui delivers scenery that almost feels too beautiful to be real.
But here’s the part that can make or break the experience: where you stay.
A sprawling five-star resort on the beach creates a very different vacation from a secluded oceanfront cottage or an intimate boutique hotel tucked into the greenery. And when you’re planning a honeymoon, anniversary or bucket-list escape, your hotel isn’t just somewhere to sleep between adventures. It becomes part of the experience.
From luxury resorts where you can happily spend the entire day poolside to romantic hideaways that make you feel like you’ve discovered your own little corner of the island, all you need to do is to pick your flavor!
There isn’t one perfect place to stay in Maui. There’s just the perfect place for the trip you’re imagining. And if you’re going to spend the money to fly all the way to Hawaii for a honeymoon, anniversary or once-in-a-lifetime escape, you might as well make the place you stay one of the things you remember most.

What Are The Different Areas Of Maui?
In a nutshell: The four best regions to stay when you visit Maui are Kihei, Wailea, Kapalua, and Kaanapali — all of which have a variety of attractions and activities perfect for couples.
Maui is littered with iconic 5-star hotel brands like Hotel Wailea (Relais & Châteaux) and Four Seasons Resort Maui. All of them make for truly unforgettable stays, but it’s key to know that they’re located in different parts of the island.
Before you go and pick your hotel just by brand name alone, let’s try to understand the different areas of Maui first.
Kapalua
Initially developed in the 1960s, West Maui (where Kapalua resides) remains one of the most popular destinations to stay and play on the island of Maui. This is one of Maui’s premier resort areas, sitting at the foot of the Kahālāwai (West Maui mountains).
As with most other Maui areas, Kapalua has lovely things to do and see, many of which are hosted by the intricately planned resort area known as Kapalua Resort.
Kapalua Resort is home to the Ritz-Carlton Kapalua, the Montage Kapalua Bay, award-winning restaurants, various boutique shops, historic sites, and two renowned golf courses that host PGA tournaments throughout the year. It’s also home to the famed Kapalua Wine & Food Festival that takes place in June.
Having said that, we understand that not everyone likes to spend their days at resorts! Kapalua also has ziplining, pristine white-sand beaches, spots to go snorkeling, and places to luau.

CONSIDER THIS: Travelers really enjoy staying in Kapalua, so expect more foot traffic and car traffic. Prepare yourself for longer drives to reach popular destinations in other parts of the island.
Kihei
If you’re dreaming of sunny days spent lounging on golden beaches, exploring marine life, and enjoying a laid-back vacation without breaking the bank, then Kīhei is for you!
Kihei is located on Maui’s sunny southwest shore, along with Wailea. While it’s not the most sought-after region for couples and honeymooners, the Southside offers six miles of coastline perfect for beach lovers.
Known for its dry, warm weather and panoramic views of Kahoʻolawe, Molokini, Lānaʻi, and West Maui, this area is perfect for swimming, surfing, snorkeling, and even whale watching during the winter months.
Kalama Beach Park offers 36 oceanfront acres of activities, from volleyball and skate parks to family-friendly playgrounds, while nearby beaches like Kamaʻole and Keālia Pond cater to nature lovers and birdwatchers.
Just north, Māʻalaea Bay serves as a hub for kayaking and boat tours, including whale watching and snorkeling trips to Molokini, and is home to the Maui Ocean Center.
Kīhei’s accommodations skew on the more affordable side, with condos, small hotels, and cottages lining the beach road, alongside shopping malls, farmers markets, and a variety of restaurants. It’s got a pretty lively nightlife scene too.
You can also do other things, like cooling down after a day on the beach with one of Maui Brewing Co.’s cold beers or enjoying their signature brewery tour.
Wailea
If you’re craving a luxurious escape with pristine beaches, world-class golf, and upscale amenities in a serene, resort-style setting, then keep an eye out for hotels in Wailea.
Known for its five must-see crescent-shaped beaches and championship golf courses, this 1,500-acre resort community in South Maui offers unparalleled ocean views and a sense of exclusivity.
Home to opulent resorts like the Grand Wailea and Four Seasons, as well as high-end condos and private homes, Wailea is a haven for those seeking relaxation and indulgence.
Spend your days snorkeling at Polo Beach, strolling along Wailea Beach, or teeing off on one of three renowned golf courses. Explore nearby natural wonders like the ‘Āhihi-Kīna‘u Natural Area Reserve or hike the Hoapili Trail along lava fields.
With fine dining, opportunities to enjoy a luau, luxury shopping at The Shops at Wailea, and world-class spas, Wailea is the epitome of a high-end Maui getaway.

Kaanapali
The West Shore of Maui is home to Kāʻanapali Beach, known for its three miles of white sand and clear waters, perfect for swimming and cliff diving.
Kāʻanapali was Hawaii’s first planned resort and has become a model for resorts around the globe. This beach, once a retreat for Maui’s royalty, is now a popular destination with five hotels and six condominium villages facing the shoreline.
Highlights of the area include Whalers Village, a shopping complex with shops, restaurants, and a whaling museum. Don’t miss the daily cliff diving ceremony off Puʻu Kekaʻa (Black Rock) at sunset, where a diver reenacts a feat by Maui’s revered King Kahekili.
Adventure seekers can enjoy zipline tours for a unique view of the coastline.

Lahaina
Given the 2023 Maui Fires, Lahaina is not what it used to be, but they are working to rebuild.
Lahaina used to be one of the most popular options for staying in Maui. One of the main whaling ports in the 1800s, this town has a dedicated area that goes untouched due to its historical value.
While some fire-affected areas remain closed to the public, several restaurants, businesses and activities in Lahaina are open and welcoming visitors. If you visit, you can learn about the historical and cultural significance of Lahaina, but stay away from fire-effected areas.

Top Hotels In Maui For Couples And Honeymoons
Now that we’ve looked at the different areas of Maui (hopefully you have your favorites), it is time to cover some of our favorite resort/hotel options on the island!
1. Hotel Wailea
Where in Maui: Wailea (South) | Price Range: $$$$

Noteworthy: Named #1 Hotel in Hawaii by Travel + Leisure in 2026 | Featured in Conde Nast Traveler’s “Top 24 Most Romantic Hotels In The World”
Hotel Wailea is one of the best places to book a few nights for a couples’ getaway or honeymoon and 100% a bucketlist stay.
It’s Maui’s only adults-only resort (a Relais & Châteaux property), and with just 72 suites spread across 15 acres of tropical gardens, it feels far more intimate than the sprawling beachfront resorts that dominate Wailea.
In fact, Travel + Leisure named Hotel Wailea the No. 1 hotel in Hawaiʻi in 2026 and inducted it into its World’s Best Awards Hall of Fame after ten consecutive years of recognition!
This 5-star luxury resort is definitely a splurge, but you get what you pay for: oversized suites, winding garden paths, cascading waterfalls, swaying palms and sweeping views toward Lānaʻi, Molokaʻi and Kahoʻolawe. You’ll feel wonderfully secluded, even though you’re right in the heart of Wailea.
And then there’s The Treehouse, an intimate dining pagoda tucked among the treetops with panoramic ocean views. Jaw-droppingly gorgeous doesn’t quite do it justice. For a romantic dinner in Maui, this setting makes the term “special occasion” feel like an understatement.
Back at the resort, the recently renovated pool area is designed for lingering, with private cabanas and an apothecary pool bar, while the open-air fitness studio offers yoga and other wellness activities.
The resort also has an onsite spa for massages, body scrubs and treatments, plus an 18-hole golf course for couples who’d rather spend an afternoon on the green.
The one thing to know: Hotel Wailea isn’t directly on the beach. But I wouldn’t consider that a dealbreaker. The resort offers complimentary transportation for the short drive to the beach, along with a beach valet that provides the chairs, umbrellas and water you need once you’re there.
2. Fairmont Kea Lani
Where in Maui: Wailea (South) | Price Range: $$$$

Does 36 holes of golf, a swim-up bar, yoga classes, an adults-only pool and an award-winning spa sound like your idea of a relaxing Maui escape? Well, that’s Fairmont Kea Lani for you.
This oceanfront, all-suite-and-villa resort sits on 22 acres of beautifully landscaped gardens along Wailea’s coast, giving you plenty of room to spread out while still putting you close to everything that makes South Maui so appealing.
The accommodations are a major part of the draw here. Every room is a suite, with a private furnished lanai and plenty of space to actually settle in. One-bedroom suites are large enough for families of four, while the two- and three-bedroom villas take things up several notches with full gourmet kitchens and dining areas, private courtyards, plunge pools, barbecue grills and ocean views.
And then there’s the Hale Kukuna Hawaiian cultural center, an oceanfront space where you can learn about Hawaiian history, language, and traditions through cultural workshops. I love seeing stuff like this at a resort because it gives travelers a way to connect with the place you’re visiting!
When it’s time to disappear for a few hours, the Fairmont Spa has 13 treatment rooms and three outdoor cabanas, along with steam rooms, a sauna, a mud bar and an adults-only pool. Signature treatments incorporate Hawaiian ingredients and traditions, including the Kea Lani Massage with macadamia and kukui nut oils and a lemongrass scrub.
Outside the spa, you can learn to paddle a traditional Hawaiian outrigger canoe, snorkel the Wailea Point reef, take a sunset sail, practice yoga, or simply relax on the beach and let the afternoon disappear.
3. Four Seasons Resort Maui
Where in Maui: Wailea (South) | Price Range: $$$$

Truly one of the most luxurious and all-inclusive accommodations in all of Maui, the Four Seasons Resort offers top-notch services and opportunities. If you’re looking to go all out for your special occasion, this is the resort for you.
The resort occupies 15 acres at the southern end of Wailea, making 24/7 postcard-perfect views inescapable.
Although the marble bathrooms are themselves little nuggets of luxury, the iconic Four Seasons Bed is the star of the show, complete with temperature-regulation technology and a pillow menu. The rest of the in-room technology is just as impressive as it is at other Four Seasons properties.

Four Seasons is one of the only resorts in Wailea that doesn’t charge a resort fee, which feels like a friendly gesture even though room rates are high.
Complimentary services include poolside snacks, an intro to scuba class, snorkeling, an outrigger canoe paddling expedition, a fitness center (complete with Peloton bikes), and elegant pool cabanas.
Worth the splurge? We think so.
4. Montage Kapalua Bay
Where in Maui: Kapalua (West) | Price Range: $$$$

If you’re planning the kind of Maui trip where the hotel is supposed to be part of the once-in-a-lifetime experience, Montage Kapalua Bay is the one to look at.
This exclusive West Maui retreat doesn’t really feel like a hotel at all… it feels like you’ve somehow been given the keys to an incredibly chic private Hawaiian residence.
That residential feel is what sets it apart from the rest. The one- to four-bedroom suites start at more than 1,200 square feet and include full kitchens, separate living and dining areas, in-unit laundry, deep soaking tubs, and private lanais overlooking the Pacific.
The rest of the resort doesn’t exactly dial things back. Multiple tiers of lagoon-style pools wind through the property with waterfalls, bridges, and built-in loungers, while a secluded adults-only infinity pool offers a quieter place to disappear for a few hours. Cabanas come with privacy curtains and poolside food and beverage service, because apparently even relaxing beside a pool can be upgraded.
Then there’s the spa, where you can book a traditional lomi-lomi massage in a private outdoor hale followed by hydrotherapy.
Outside the resort, Kapalua Bay is practically at your doorstep, with opportunities for snorkeling, kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding. The nearby Kapalua Coastal Trail is an easy way to work off all that lounging, with roughly two miles of coastline, tide pools and dramatic ocean views. And if you want to turn dinner into an occasion, Merriman’s Kapalua is just across the bay.
NOTE: The property is in the middle of a major identity change. It transitioned from the Montage portfolio to Marriott Bonvoy in March 2026 and is expected to fully relaunch as a St. Regis in 2027. If you’re booking a future honeymoon or anniversary, pay close attention to what is included and which brand’s amenities and loyalty benefits apply to your dates.
5. Hana-Maui Resort
Where in Maui: Hana (East) | Price Range: $$-$$$

If the mega-resort experience isn’t really your thing, Hana-Maui Resort offers a completely different flavor of Maui. Tucked away at the end of the famous Road to Hāna, this boutique resort sprawls across roughly 75 acres of tropical gardens and will feel like a secluded Hawaiian retreat.
This is the place I’d look if your idea of a bucket-list Maui stay involves slowing the heck down. Some rooms are intentionally low-tech, without TVs, clocks or radios, making it particularly easy to unplug and disappear into the island.
And then there’s the setting. You’re already in Hāna, surrounded by the rainforests, waterfalls and dramatic coastline that make the Road to Hāna so spectacular. Staying here means you don’t have to cram all of Hāna into one exhausting day trip. You can actually wake up here.
Waiʻānapanapa State Park is just a short drive away, and the resort offers bikes, cultural activities, yoga and other ways to spend a slow day without getting back in the car.
For couples, the spa is another reason to linger. Treatments incorporate Hawaiian wellness traditions, and the property has a cold plunge, outdoor showers and a whirlpool overlooking Kapueokahi Bay. Oceanfront bungalows and residences with kitchens are also available if you want a little more privacy and space.
6. Andaz Maui
Where in Maui: Wailea (South) | Price Range: $$$

Discover a luxurious sanctuary at Andaz Maui at Wailea, a hidden gem nestled along the crescent-shaped shores of Wailea. This one’s perfect for the savvy traveler seeking both relaxation and cultural connection. And personally, we LOVE the Andaz chain!
As the first Andaz resort in the world, this hotel seamlessly blends modern luxury with authentic Hawaiian culture, designed by the acclaimed Rockwell Group to reflect the spirit of today’s Hawaii.
This 15-acre beachfront retreat offers an uncomplicated yet indulgent experience, with thoughtfully curated services and a warm, welcoming atmosphere. Guestrooms feature refreshing rain showers, private lanais, and complimentary luxuries, while the resort’s design and amenities immerse you in the beauty of the island.
If you can tear yourself away from the soothingly modern rooms, of which there are 320 of them, you should most definitely partake in the resort’s iconic luau experience, featuring an authentic three-course plated dinner hand served to your table and a premium bar with handcrafted cocktails, beer and wine.
The resort also offers many guided cultural experiences, such as Chef’s Table at Ka’ana Kitchen, a mixologist class, surf lessons, coconut weaving, lei-making, kayak tours, outrigger excursions, and more.
And did we also mention there’s the golf course, just a five-minute drive away? Oh yeah, you’ll be quite busy with fun and romance here.
7. The Westin Maui Resort & Spa, Ka’anapali
Where in Maui: Ka’anapali (West) | Price Range: $$$

Everyone knows what a Westin is, right? This upscale Marriott brand needs no introduction.
As one of the few resorts on the West Shore, The Westin Maui Resort & Spa, Ka’anapali is a standout destination, boasting 552 rejuvenating guestrooms in the Kūkahi Tower, designed with Biophilic elements to connect you with nature, and 217 luxury rooms in Hōkūpaʻa, which grants exclusive access to The Lānai for curated culinary and cultural experiences.
With six pools—including an adults-only infinity pool, a family-friendly area with splash zones and a 270-foot waterslide, and a serene hot tub—there’s no shortage of ways to unwind.
Immerse yourself into Hawaiian culture with on-site activities like hula dancing and lei-making classes, or indulge in the full-service spa for ultimate relaxation. The resort also hosts an unforgettable on-site luau and features five restaurants and bars serving traditional Hawaiian cuisine.
For a touch of modern excitement, “The Valley Alley” offers a mix of arcade entertainment and bespoke dining, making it a hotspot for both locals and visitors. And with a complimentary hotel shuttle to nearby West Maui attractions, you can explore the island without the hassle of renting a car.
8. Paia Inn
Where in Maui: Paia (East) | Price Range: $$

Noteworthy: Great for travelers who want a more low-key experience away from the resorts
Paia Inn, a boutique beach inn located in Maui’s funky boho town of Paia, has everything you’d need in a more low-key Maui vacation.
The decor at the hotel embraces Paia’s low-key, mellow vibe and features Bali-inspired architecture. Paia doesn’t have much in the way of hotels since it’s really a local’s town, but that’s part of the draw: you’re getting a much more laidback experience away from all the resorts that dot the island.
There’s also Japanese-inspired dining, private beach access, and lots of activities you can keep busy with nearby. Beach towels, chairs, boogie boards and snorkel gear are provided, and the concierge can arrange whale watching cruises, surf lessons, zip lining tours, luaus, massages and other activities.
Don’t miss their award-winning “Best New Restaurant”, Vana Sushi Bar on-site during your stay.
Rooms start on the small side—just under 300 square feet. Though the inn is smaller than other accommodations on this list, it is a beautiful and architecturally unique spot for a romantic time with your favorite person.
9. The Ritz-Carlton Maui, Kapalua
Where in Maui: Kapalua | Price Range: $$$$

Nestled within Kapalua’s 22,000 acres of pristine coastline on Maui’s northwest shore, The Ritz-Carlton Maui is a haven of luxury and adventure. This iconic resort offers over 60 immersive experiences, from coastal hikes and bike rides to lei-making workshops and keiki cooking classes, ensuring every moment is filled with discovery.
Music and food lovers will delight in the resort’s monthly Kapalua Concert Series and Chef Series, as well as the weekly Chef’s Table under the stars—a culinary experience like no other.
For those seeking an extra touch of indulgence, the Ritz-Carlton Club Lounge provides a private sanctuary with gourmet meals, a dedicated concierge, and unbeatable views.
10. Hyatt Regency Maui Resort & Spa
Where in Maui: Ka‘anapali | Price Range: $$$

With its prime location near Ka‘anapali Golf Courses and Whalers Village, plus its endless amenities and activities, the Hyatt Regency Maui is the perfect blend of relaxation and adventure for your Hawaiian getaway.
Perched on 40 stunning oceanfront acres along Ka‘anapali Beach in West Maui, the resort features 810 newly renovated guestrooms and suites, each boasting contemporary Hawaiian decor, private lanais, and panoramic views of the Pacific or lush gardens.
Foodies will love the resort’s 10 dining options, including Japengo, known for its award-winning sushi and Pacific Rim cuisine, and Son’z Steakhouse, a haven for wine lovers and steak enthusiasts. Don’t miss the Drums of the Pacific Lu‘au, where you can enjoy a traditional Polynesian feast and show under the stars.
For couples looking to immerse in local culture, the resort offers activities like scuba lessons, lei-making, hula classes, and even stargazing through high-powered telescopes.
Can’t Narrow It Down To One Hotel? Tips To Help You Decide
So you’ve narrowed it down to a few hotels and now you’re staring at three browser tabs thinking, “Okay…but which one do I book???”
This is where I stop looking at the pretty pools and IG-worthy rooms and start thinking about how I’ll actually spend my time on Maui. Because when two hotels are similarly priced and equally gorgeous, the little things can make a surprisingly big difference.
What will you actually do at the hotel?
For a honeymoon or anniversary, don’t underestimate how much time you’ll spend at your resort. If you’re dreaming about slow mornings, pool afternoons, sunset cocktails and a spa day, paying more for a spectacular property may be worth it because you’re actually going to enjoy those amenities.
On the other hand, if you’re planning to spend every day exploring the island, hiking, snorkeling, driving the Road to Hāna and chasing waterfalls, I wouldn’t spend a fortune on a resort you’ll barely see.
This is probably the biggest tie-breaker: Are you booking a hotel to experience Maui from, or a hotel to experience Maui at?
How couple-friendly is the room itself?
For a bucket-list stay, I want more than a nice bed. If you’re deciding between two properties, look at the rooms and ask yourself which one you’d be genuinely excited to come back to after a day of exploring.
A private lanai with an ocean view, an oversized soaking tub, an outdoor shower, or even just a beautiful place to sit with your morning coffee can make the room feel like part of the vacation rather than somewhere you crash at night.
And don’t overlook the romantic extras! If one property has a gorgeous spa, exceptional sunset dining or a particularly beautiful setting while the other simply has a nice pool, that difference may matter more than you think.
Which location makes your itinerary easier?
Maui isn’t enormous, but it’s not a place where you want to spend your entire vacation sitting in traffic either. Look at your must-dos and see which hotel puts you closer to the things you actually want to experience.
If you’re dreaming about long, lazy beach days and resort time, staying in Wailea or Kāʻanapali may make more sense than choosing a hotel based on what’s technically closest to the middle of the island.
If the Road to Hāna, Haleakalā and exploring Upcountry are high on your list, I’d give location more weight.
And if you’re stuck between two hotels, pull up Google Maps and actually look at the drive times to your must-dos. Twenty minutes here and there doesn’t sound like much (… until you’ve done it six times).
What’s the REAL price?
Don’t compare the nightly room rate and call it a day. Look at the number you’ll actually pay.
That means checking resort fees, parking, taxes, breakfast, included amenities and anything else you’re likely to spend money on once you’re there. A hotel that looks $100 cheaper per night can suddenly be much less of a bargain after you add $50 for parking, a resort fee, and $50 per person for breakfast.
And for a romantic trip, I’d also think about what you’ll spend at the hotel. If one property has restaurants, a great pool and complimentary activities you actually plan on partaking in, paying a little more for the room could make sense.
If you’re going to leave every morning and return exhausted at night, I say save the money and opt for a more affordable hotel.
When are you going?
This can be the ultimate tie-breaker when you’re looking at two otherwise similar hotels.
Maui hotel prices can swing dramatically depending on your dates, so don’t automatically assume the more expensive property is out of reach. Check a few different dates if your schedule is flexible.
A dream resort during a quieter period can sometimes cost considerably less than the same room during a holiday or peak travel period.
Do you actually need a car?
This one is easy to overlook when you’re comparing hotels.
I personally never visit any Hawaiian island without a car. I love being able to get out and explore, stop at a roadside fruit stand, pull over for a beach I wasn’t planning on visiting and experience places beyond the resort bubble. That’s part of the fun for me.
But if your idea of the perfect Maui vacation is staying at a gorgeous resort, walking to the beach, ordering a mai tai and barely leaving the property, you may not need one.
You’ll want to look at parking costs, resort shuttles and what’s within walking distance. A hotel with free or inexpensive parking could save you a surprising amount over a week, while a resort with restaurants, beaches and activities right outside your door might make a car unnecessary.
And finally…which one makes you say “OH, HECK YES”?
This is a honeymoon, anniversary, or bucket-list Maui trip after all. You’re allowed to choose the hotel that simply gets you pumped for your trip!
If you’ve narrowed it down to two properties and the practical stuff is roughly equal, look at the room, the view, the pool, the setting, alllll the little details, and ask yourself which one you’d be genuinely disappointed to miss.
Because sometimes the right hotel isn’t the one with the longest amenity list or the cheapest nightly rate. It’s the one you’ll still be talking about years later.
Need a rental car for your trip? To find cheap rental cars, I always start with Booking.com’s car rental comparison tool. Their search tool is one of the best I’ve found, which is why I go back to it every single time.
